Maxim Kantor, a Russian artist and scholar of international acclaim, was inspired to paint this 9-foot-by-5-foot crucifix scene during his time as a fellow at Notre Dame's Institute for Advanced Study in spring 2015. He then donated the work to the University.

In addition to painting, Kantor is well-known as a sculptor, novelist, playwright, and essayist. According to a Notre Dame feature on his residency, Kantor's early work "went largely unnoticed in Cold War Russia because it did not conform to the tastes of the Soviet regime. Kantor emphasizes human suffering overcome through solidarity and love, a perspective that was out of touch with the prevailing socialist realism of the time."
